The 1960’s -- December 1962 – the Fraternity held its final wintertime General Convention, and 48th overall, in Columbus, OH. It was also the year Elmer Collins of Delta Alpha Lambda began his tenure as Midwestern Regional Vice President (1962).

Channelwood Village, Akron, OH
With passage of the Federal Housing Act of 1963, Akron’s Eta Tau Lambda Chapter, under the leadership of James R. Williams, developed Alpha Phi Alpha Homes Incorporated in 8/30/1966. Through this foundation, financing was secured for the Channelwood Village housing complex, Ohio’s first fraternal housing project,. Groundbreaking took place October 29, 1971, with first occupancy in late 1972. The formal Dedication was held on October 28, 1973, a proud day for Alpha brothers.  Channelwood’s 551 units include a 15-story high rise of one and two bedroom units, 130 townhouse units, and 144 two-bedroom garden apartments on twenty-two acres of land.

FEBRUARY -- ALPHA PHI ALPHA On Your Yard/Community Day! PT. 2

We began talking about the first decade in our previous post. We will cover the next 40 years at this time.
Daniel Fowler

Daniel David Fowler served as General President during the same 1919 year when Phi Chapter was seated at Ohio University in Athens and when his chapter hosted Cleveland’s first General Convention. Sadly, just weeks after finishing his tenure in office, he became the first General President to enter Omega Chapter.  He never recovered from having contracted pneumonia. Daniel Fowler enters Omega Chapter 2/10/1920. He was 27.
