FEBRUARY -- ALPHA PHI ALPHA On Your Yard/Community Day!

Dr. Henry Lake Dickason
Ohio District Director Bro. Dr. Willis Lonzer has designated February 2011 as the month to highlight the rich fraternal history in Ohio, and is naming it for the first General President to have been initiated in the Buckeye State. What follows is in recognition of the Bro. Dr. Henry Lake Dickason Initiative.

James C. Kingslow

The Ohio relationship with Alpha Phi Alpha began with a letter received October 6, 1910 by then General Secretary Simeon Saunders Booker. James Claude Kingslow wrote that letter. This Gamma Chapter initiate would later become our 11th General President, and in 1926, a Youngstown, Ohio resident.

On January 13, 1911, Kappa Chapter joined the fraternal fold and was seated at Ohio State University.  From that year and every decade since, Alpha Brothers nurtured here have made and changed history.
The First Fraternal Shield, 1911

In the first year of the first decade, the tone of influence was set with the introduction, and 1911 General Convention approval, of the design of the fraternity shield.  This original depiction remains the foundation for the official shield used today.

More about Dickason:

In 1913, Henry Lake Dickason was elected General President. His administratiored the year 1914; and, included the March introduction and first printing of “The Sphinx”, the official organ of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Pi Chapter is chartered 5/14-15/1914. (Just like the two schools that housed the charter members, Case School of Applied Science and Western Reserve University, the group then and now recognizes two days as its official charter date.) Dickason conducted the ceremong Pi Chapter in Cleveland.

Stay tuned for the next posting ....
. A special thanks to District Historian Bro. Donald Ross, of Alpha Rho Lambda Chapter, who has created a presentation that will allow Brothers to learn and celebrate the rich fraternal history that comes from the Buckeye State.
